the resulting dragged object is a empty object with childrens parented to it
Empty objects can be moved/rotated/scaled, but they can’t be clicked/hovered/dragged over. They are not rendered, they are just invisible points (coordinates) with no dimensions. This won’t work and has never worked.

If you want to move the whole group then you should use the group as a target.
A combination of methods: the left button moves individually, other buttons move all at once.

If you don’t see the meaning in something it primarily means that you just don’t see it but not the absence of meaning at all.
