Making a practical 3D product configurator

Making a practical 3D product configurator

In our previous article Do-it-yourself 3D product configurator, we discussed creating a basic jewelry customizer app using the Verge3D framework combined with Blender or 3ds Max modeling suites. Today we're going to upgrade this project and make it a more real-life e-commerce application which includes the following must-have features:   Calculating the price based on the user's configuration. Submitting orders for further processing by a sales manager. Social media buttons. Eventually, we will have something like this: As usual, you can find the source files (3ds Max, Blender, and Puzzles) of this configurator, as well as the WordPress plugin itself, in…

WebGL: cloud-based or self-hosted?

WebGL: cloud-based or self-hosted?

A couple of months ago some of our customers reported connection issues when using our Verge3D Network service. We investigated this and figured out that the reason for this was the blocked IP addresses of Amason Web Services, a popular cloud platform leveraged by our Network platform. Luckily, Verge3D is a pure offline tool to which the Network relates as a convenient but not essential feature. Nevertheless, this event motivated me to think big picture. As a result, I decided to share my thoughts on cloud services versus self-hosted in this article. Foreword WebGL is all about online. It seems quite…

Bugfix update of Verge3D for Blender/Max

Bugfix update of Verge3D for Blender/Max

Version 2.7.1 includes the following changes: Styles for annotations and the default no-WebGL message can now be easily overridden by applications. To do this the following CSS classes can be used: .v3d-annotation, .v3d-annotation-dialog and .v3d-webgl-error. A reference to an HTML element can now be passed upon initialization of a Verge3D application instead of element id if there is a need to do so. The Puzzles editor now shows a scary warning if a mismatch…

Verge3D versus Unity WebGL

Verge3D versus Unity WebGL

We're often asked about the differences between our software and the WebGL version of the popular game engine Unity. To answer this question, I used the official Unity3D manual and some information found on their community forums and compared certain aspects of Verge3D and Unity WebGL implementations. Performance Verge3D is initially written in JavaScript, a programming language that is native to the Web. As such, the engine works very fast and is compact in regard to both file size and memory footprint. Unity3D historically was working on the Internet as a browser plug-in. After all browser vendors began dropping plug-ins…
