I’m interested in building some Verge3D plugins.

Has anyone done this before and got sales? I’m unsure how big this community is and whether it’s viable to dedicate time to it.

The plugins I see on Gumroad seem to have no reviews, and its not possible to see total number of sales.

Profitability….thats always a good question. One based on a number of factors. One of which is audience size. The Verge3d community is small. However plugins are and do sell. The price and profitability of which are up to you to determine. What I do recommend is looking at the current plugin developers and see the amount of feedback they get. Look at YouTube and determine if it has a following other than the forum. With a niche community like Verge3D I aways state that if the plugin isn’t for the developers own purpose with a willingness to share and maintain…dont do it. A plugin that is not supported for the long term hurts the plugin community giving the Verge3d plugin community a bad rep.

Most people want a free or close to free plugin…and the reality is that price model is not working. Superhive, previously blendermarket, is realizing the plugin pricing model is broken and a change is coming. Verge3D…. plugins……so far have been relatively basic with a few notable exceptions so pricing is very low. However, if there were a substantial plugin – worth $$$ then the question is…. why wouldnt Soft8Soft incorporate it into the app itself. So there is a fine line plugin developers have to walk and profitability is one that keeps many plugins on the developers local computer.

Hi Xeon, you make some great points that resonate a lot with me. When I first started working with Verge3D two years ago I was disappointed to find many of the plugins I purchased straight up did not work, and had completely unresponsive developers. You can see examples of this all over the forum’s history. What surprised me further is that many of the plugins were still on the Verge3D list of plugins! (However looks like this has been updated now :good: ).

The ones that did work had critical malfunction which made them unusable for production (for example not functional on mobile). This left quite a sour taste and I ended up hiring developers & learning to build plugins for myself rather than trust third parties.

The fact that so many plugins are not maintained does make me think the demand is low, however I do think there is still a market for those that are built with clear documentation/tutorials and fix a real pain point.

I agree with you. If a developer can continually evolve and maintain their plugin and provide support. I am sure they will get long term users.

    Hi
Developing plugin out of passion and keeping some business in view is normal, however I tried giving it a hit around a year’s time back. Made a plugin for quick CSS animated menus in Verge but unfortunately there was no any response. We got only one response saying he had some technical issues while placing order, we fixed it by talking to banker, But later there was no any response.
it may be in our case only, perhaps others might have received better response.

I think xeon and visualizer are right on. I’ve been using Verge3D for about 2 years now and my impression is that it is a niche and slowly growing community focused on graphic/web designers with some development experience. As awesome as Verge3D is I don’t think “the word is out,” but when it does catch on I think it is really going to take off. It might be good to be in on the ground floor when it does happen. If you love the program and want to contribute to its growth I’d say go for it. But if your main goal is to make money off of plugins now I’d probably wait until there’s a bigger demand.

If I might say something in the spirit of FOSS (free and open source software), all software communities need die hards who love it and want to give without expectation of reward. Xeon got me into Verge3d by helping me get a grasp on it and he contributes in other ways as well. I’m reminded of a bible verse that says, “Do not worry about what you will eat or what you will wear. Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you.”

    Hi,
Giving up things is very cool, meanwhile I have another verse in mind: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Verge3D is made so it does encourage people to earn money they deserve. Perhaps plugins is not so profitable nowadays, but there are plenty of other methods :good:

I agree that there are plenty of ways to be profitable with Verge3d. My two cents to all Verge3D developers is once you become proficient ….. your pricing will determine your profitability, your value will win the client, your communication and integrity will keep the client.
