Basically I need to break a wheel down into it customizable parts. This means sides of spokes can be their own color etc. I’m working with a 3d designer who works in solidworks and when I bring the STL file into blender the mesh is all over the place making it almost impossible to select faces and export them individually. Do I need to look into 3ds max? Or is there a way he could color each face a specific color and then use puzzles to differentiate the faces and change them accordingly?

    Hi,
This is something of interest to me as well. Though this suggestion doesn’t help on the blender side of things like you’re asking, it may have potential.

Verge3D is capable of using this STL loader …

Verge 3d git repository STL loader code

You could have that worked into your app, and use code to distinguish targeted areas for coloring.

This kind of method is something I’m just learning to do now though.

Word of advice on importing STL files into blender, in the import/open file dialogue window, use the axis changing option, as blender uses Z for “up” and STL I believe, uses Y as “up”.

There are free STL conversion apps or there that may help put things in more useful order.

You can use a complex system of mask to color different parts with different colors, but better to divide one object into separate objects.
