HTML table tr puzzle stacking on top of itself problem

hi
i’m trying to have a plain HTML table with 8 rows only one column.
here’s my setup
the tr’s (table row) just keep stacking one on top of each other instead of being as they should, the next ROW down.

what could solve this problem?

Edit: also, I have a version with td’s in each row (cells) but same results.

edit2: now i’m trying css grid and every span overlaps as well…what gives?

edit 3: got a workaround working with flex grid (which is better for this) but still wondering why those puzzles didn’t work as expected.
